Tommy Tubberville

As current U.S. Senator and candidate for Alabama Governor, Tuberville has not only defended white nationalists, but has also made several racist statements against marginalized communities such as the Black & Muslim community, encouraged ICE to shoot back at lawful protesters, and also encourages unlawful mass deportation under ICE.

Sponsors of Christian Nationalist Legislation

Across the Republican party, there has been a push to incorporate Christianity into public spaces. This year, Alabama republicans sponsored HB216 & SB99 that requires the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public schools, and HB43 that requires daily prayer and the pledge of allegiance in public schools. These bills unfortunately did not receive major Democratic pushback as the bills violate current Alabama "divisive concepts" laws and the Establishment Clause of the Constitution.

Steve Marshall

As Alabama Attorney General, Marshall has supported harsher criminal punishments and the idea that offenders can not be rehabilitated, enforced Alabama's abortion ban and the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and also championed Alabama's Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act, which makes it a felony to provide gender-affirming puberty blockers or hormones to minors.

 Eric Balentine

As Colbert County Sheriff, Balentine has continued to work in partnership with ICE to deport individuals in his county. He publicly called for ICE to come to Florence, AL. Through the 287(g) program, officers are allowed to act as ICE agents to detain and arrest undocumented persons in exchange for additional funds to be sent to the Colbert County Police Department.

Ed Oliver

As Alabama House Representative, Oliver has sponsored anti-DEI legislation in Alabama that limits diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in public schools and also has created legislation that prohibits "divisive concepts" in the classroom which aims to prohibit teaching that any group is inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive.

Tyler-683x1024.jpg

Ron Tyler

In his past role as Florence City Police Chief, Tyler used the city’s parade permit and noise ordinances to discourage PSS protesters which led to a lawsuit initiated by PSS in 2022. Due to their unconstitutional polices, the city agreed to amend its parade and protest rules. Now as current mayor of Florence, Tyler promoted Turning Point USA and used his role to encourage city council members to not approve PSS' historical marker outside of the "Eternal Vigil" confederate monument. Although the dedication speech was severely racist against the Black community, Tyler did not want to "make people uncomfortable" by placing the marker next to the monument.

Gerald Allen

As Alabama House Representative, Allen championed the Alabama Memorial Preservation Act of 2017 which prohibits the relocation, removal, alteration, or renaming of public monuments, buildings, and street names on public property that are 40 or more years old, specifically targeting Confederate memorials and has also introduced legislation that would raise the punishment from a one-time $25,000 fine to $5,000 per day every day there is a violation of this act.

Opposing Florence City Council Members

After years of organizing and fighting for the full history to be told in Florence, city council members---  Jackie Hendrix, Josh Bowling, Thomas Spence and Chapel King--- voted to not approve a historical marker written in partnership with the city's Historical Commission to be placed next to the "Eternal Vigil" confederate monument.
