LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WAFF) - The founder of Project Say Something, Camille Bennett, and the historical commission recently approved language for a historical marker to be placed next to a Confederate monument outside the Lauderdale County courthouse.
Bennett says the marker is needed to give the statue historical context, since its removal is prohibited under the Alabama Memorial Preservation Act of 2017.
Bennett says when you walk into the courthouse, all you see is the monument.
She says it just feels like an incomplete history.
“It’s a process. So next, it has to go to the building department, and then the city council votes on whether or not the placement is correct. But we’re very optimistic about this process since it got past the historical commission, and that’s a city-appointed commission.”
Bennett says they’re hoping to get the marker approved by November.
